Selena Gomez Steps Out Of Her 'Bubble' With 'Spring Breakers'

With the just-released trailer for Harmony Korine's gritty, grungy romp "Spring Breakers," actress Selena Gomez made good on her promise to "shock" fans who know her best from the family friendly Disney series "Wizards of Waverly Place" and her candy-pop music career. And, indeed, Selena bares a lot in the fresh footageand not just because she's clad almost exclusively in a bikini. There's a certain level of vulnerability inherent in the roleone of many topics the 20-year-old tackled in her February cover story for Nylon magazine.

"It was my first audition in years," she recalled. "I definitely felt that with my first stepping-out role, I should choose something that I could understand a little more. I was really nervous, but Harmony took a chance with me. He said, 'You live in this bubble, and I'm going to take you out of it, but you have to trust me.'"

And trust him she did, wrapping a project unlike any she'd done previously, while making a bevy of new BFFs along the way.

"It was always us four girls," she said of co-stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine. "We'd go to our favorite restaurants, we'd go to the moviesAshley and I saw 'The Hunger Games.' We went shopping, we went on boat rides, we sle! pt over in each others' hotel rooms. It was really fun!"

True friends can be hard to come byone of many reasons Selena truly cherishes her long friendship with another industry insider: country cutie Taylor Swift.

"[Taylor Swift and I] both experienced the same things at the same time But we've never once talked about our industry," she told the mag. "She just became the person I'd go to for an issue with my family or boyfriend. It's so hard to trust girls, so I'm lucky to have her."

You can see Selena in "Spring Breakers," which opens in limited release March 22, going wide April 5.
