Blake Lively, Selena Gomez and Others to Star in the 'Sex and the City' Prequel

Blake Lively to star in "SATC"?

The Internet is abuzz with rumors today that the "Sex and the City" franchise will soon be filming a new movie, a prequel to the TV series and movies. In it, fans will see the four characters, Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda, as young women.

The new cast reportedly includes Emma Roberts, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, and Elizabeth Olsen. These four up and coming actresses will appeal to teens, tweens and young adults, but I don't believe they'll be a huge selling factor for older SATC fans. When the TV series premiered on HBO in 1998, the four starlets were still schoolgirls, ranging from age seven to eleven. Many of their present day fans would have been just as young at the time.

First we have Emma Roberts, best known as the niece of actress Julia Roberts. The young star, who reportedly will play Miranda Hobbes, has a decent number of shows and films under her belt, but we grown-ups don't know much about her. I will be interesting to see if she lives up to her famous last name.

Blake Lively is one of the better known stars about of the young foursome. She has had great success in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and her TV series, "Gossip Girl". She is rumored to play the saucy Samantha Jones in the movie. I think the blonde beauty is a great choice for this role, as she is a sex symbol in her own right. She has a sultry persona, but seems like the type of girl you would want to be your friend. If her role in ! "Sisterh ood" is any indication, the "Green Lantern" actress is a starlet with a promising career who will bring excitement to the Samantha character.

Selena Gomez will likely play the role of the prim and proper Charlotte York. The "Wizards of Waverly Place" star is a good match for the role, as she seems like the girl next door, just like Charlotte. She is currently an "It" girl thanks in part to her relationship with singing sensation Justin Bieber. I do find it interesting that they selected a Latina star to play the role of a character who has described herself on the TV series as a W.A.S.P. (which stands for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). I'm all for it, it's just interesting. I look forward to seeing if the young starlet can carry a role that is so important to "Sex and the City" fans.

Finally we have Elizabeth Olsen. My first thought was -- who??? I had to do an Internet search to find out she's the younger sister of the famed Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley. She has had a variety of acting roles, none of which I've seen. But you never know, a fresh face may be just what the big screen needs. She will likely play the role of Carrie Bradshaw.

I probably won't go see the "Sex and the City" prequel in the theaters, but I will most likely watch it when it's released on DVD. Although I'm of the camp that says they shouldn't make a prequel and should just leave well enough alone, since they're moving forward, I will want to see how they portray the young characters.
